Alone in the Workshop – Part 16 – Gluing the neck and bridge on
Aug 18th
….The ziricote guitar has been sprayed and polished…
- About to join the neck to the body
- There’s no going back now!
- It’s a beautiful moment…
- when two becomes one…..cue song…
The guitar has to be finished tomorrow as we are setting off on Friday to deliver it for Rich’s birthday. It has been left as long as possible for the laquer to cure before buffing.
The neck and bridge were glued on as usual – no problems there. Now it will sit over night to dry off before it is strung and set up. Can’t wait to hear it!!!!
Custom Jazz Guitar – ‘The Spaceship’
Jul 26th
We come in peace…..with jazz…
- The plates have been carved on the outside
- Steve dropped by to check progress on his archtop – ends up serenading us, and duffy joins in
I finally made a start on Steve’s custom archtop….This is a long term custom build. Steve sends a small amount each month by direct debit. It’s a great way to commision a guitar – in 2 or 3 years he will have it in his hands and will have hardly noticed paying for it!
Steve is an old friend having come on the build your own course way back when we were based in Coventry. He popped in recently to have a look and talk about some of the finer points of the spec. It will have a lot of ‘art deco’ features – The tail piece headstock and finger rest will all be made in this style. The body and neck will be some kind of midnight blue burst with silver flakes – ‘I want it to look like a space ship’ he said. Hence the name!
The top and back plates are jointed and shaped to an arch on the outside. The inside will eventually be carved out to a bowl shape with an even thickness of 3/16″ all over.
The sides have been prepared ready for bending (not pictured)- one of my favourite bits – looking forward to that.
Steve and his partner Evelyn are founding members of the Highland Hotclub – Click the link to hear them play.

Don’t Leave me Alone in the Workshop……part 1
Jun 12th
I accidentally started four new guitars on Thursday.
- left to right: Cocobolo Parlour, Rich’s Ziricote, Maple and mahogany
- before and after joining
- Rosettes in and flat braces glued on
- One I made earlier
This is the sort of thing that happens between running the courses. I love making acoustic guitars as that’s what I play for fun.
The guitars are all quite small and the necks mostly join at the 12th fret except the mahogany one which will be at the 14th.
The Ziricote one is for a friend of mine’s 40th birthday the other 3 are for stock so are available to buy.
The guitars are all very similar but with subtle differences – I couldn’t make my mind up about certain aspects of the design so why not make all four. It will be interesting to see which one comes out ‘best’.
If you like the look of the guitars you can contact me to put your name down on one.
There is still time to customize any of these guitars – wood for the neck, binding…..fret wire, hardware and inlays, could all be your choice.
