- Putting the strings on
- re-crowning the frets
- Dave did it…
- byo 298
- mahogany back and neck
- custom sunburst
- Carved top
- Flame maple cap

- switch layout
- ‘Throbak’ pickups
- Compensated nut
- bound headstock
- Custom headstock inlay
Dave came on a recent build your own custom guitar course at the Bailey workshop and made this beauty, which he then left with us for spraying. This was just before we got our new UV lacquer system so we used traditional nitro-cellulose which takes 8-12 weeks to spray and polish. He is the last of the bunch to come and assemble his guitar after circumstances prevented him from finishing on the same day as Kevin.
The guitar has a stunning flamed maple cap with a custom colour that Dave chose for the sunburst.
The pickups are ‘Throbak’s‘ – handmade in the USA and sounded awesome. There is an extra switch which adds an out of phase option.
Crown inlays, a distinctive headstock inlay, and binding around the fretboard and headstock were all made here by Dave himself adding to the totally custom look.
This is the second guitar Dave has made on our course- his first was an Archtop with the same headstock inlay. Dave has made two of the most stunning instruments ever on our course.

Bailey Custom Electric – Manuel – P3
Oct 11th
Manuel’s ‘new wife’ is a stunner!
- Manuel’s ‘new wife’
- Rear view
- Side on…
- Lying down…
- Sunburst UV Gloss
- Flame maple cap
- Meranti back
- Custom headstock
- ‘all access’ neck joint
- custom wiring
- Custom jack socket
- White Bailey Logo
This is a milestone for Bailey Guitars- Our first guitar to be finished with UV lacquer! As you can see it looks fantastic but there is more to it than just appearances.
This guitar is based on Manuel’s first guitar – he got it when he was nineteen and it is now just about played to destruction. I measured it very carefully so it should feel exactly the same if he closes his eyes, until he goes up the high end, as this new one has a modified neck joint to allow better access to the higher frets. Of course the super smooth feel of the new UV finish will give it away but I’m sure he’ll get used to that.
The wiring was customised to Manuel’s requirements: one volume, one tone control, a five way pickup selector switch and a mini switch. The tone control is also a push/pull switch which turns off one of the coils in the humbucker and the mini switch activates the neck pickup whatever position the 5 way selector is in. This enables neck and bridge single coils to be on at the same time. The fancy jack socket plate definitely adds a touch of class and was supplied along with all the other parts by Manuel himself.
Manuel is a great player and has become a great friend also, so it was a pleasure to build this instrument for him. I look forward to seeing him play it soon and I hope he finds with his ‘new wife’ another long and happy relationship!

Custom Build – Set neck, Single cut, Flamed Cap- P14

….Bailey Logo….decisions….decisions…
- The colour is safely sealed in with a coat of lacquer
- The back after coating with lacquer
- Across the top – my preference on this shape
- Across the top – end on
- Down the middle – both ways look good!
- Down the middle – end on
I’m ready to put the mother of pearl logo on today – I should have done this before the guitar got sprayed (obviously) but I wanted to get it through to Billy ASAP so the lacquer has plenty of time to dry. He got the colour on while I was busy with another custom build and a couple of acoustic ‘build your own’ days – post on that to come……
Normally I’d put it across the top like the first two pics…
But it could go along the middle….
Looking good or what?
